About Us

The Association of Tamil Nadu Medical Device Industry (ATMED) is the trade association for the companies that design, manufacture and supply medical devices, in-vitro diagnostics and allied healthcare products across Tamil Nadu.

Our story

The medical device industry in Tamil Nadu reached a significant milestone when ATMED was officially inaugurated on 26 August 2023, during the IMDI 21st National Conference held in Chennai. The association was formed by manufacturers who saw that the state's growing MedTech sector — from single-use consumables and hospital equipment to diagnostics and electronics — needed a single, credible voice with regulators, government and the wider industry.

In the years since, ATMED has met the Director of Drugs Control for Tamil Nadu and submitted formal representations on behalf of members, worked with the Bureau of Indian Standards' Chennai office on standards and certification, taken part in a Parliamentary Standing Committee meeting, co-ordinated with the Medical Devices Park, and built academic partnerships with Anna University and engineering colleges across the state. We co-organised a two-day national conference with the Indian Medical Device Industry (IMDI), exhibited at Medicall, and in May 2026 ran the first ATMED Job Mela and Industry Seminar to connect biomedical graduates with member companies.

Why Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu is one of India's principal manufacturing states, with a deep base in engineering, polymers, electronics and healthcare delivery. Chennai and the surrounding districts host a growing concentration of medical device makers, testing laboratories and component suppliers, alongside the institutions that train the engineers the sector depends on. ATMED exists to help that ecosystem grow — to make it easier to manufacture here, to meet Indian and international standards, and to reach markets at home and abroad.

Our objectives

  • Represent the interests of Tamil Nadu's medical device, IVD and allied manufacturers before regulators, standards bodies and government.
  • Help members meet Indian and international quality and regulatory requirements.
  • Create opportunities for members to learn, network and do business together.
  • Connect industry with academia so that students and startups can enter the sector.
  • Support locally developed devices in reaching domestic and global markets.

What we do

Industry Advocacy

We actively engage with regulatory bodies and government agencies to advocate for policies that promote a conducive environment for medical device innovation, manufacturing, and distribution.

These platforms provide opportunities for business partnerships, collaborations, and the exchange of ideas.

Research and Innovation Support

We encourage research and development initiatives by offering grants, funding assistance, and mentorship to startups and innovators in the medical device space. This fosters the creation of novel solutions that address healthcare challenges.

Quality & Standards Enhancement

We work towards maintaining the highest standards of quality and safety in medical devices.

Market Access Support

We assist member organizations in international distribution networks so that locally developed medical devices can reach global markets effectively. By actively engaging in these activities, the Association of Tamil Nadu Medical Device Industry strives to play a pivotal role in driving innovation, growth, and excellence within the medical device sector, ultimately benefiting patients, healthcare providers, and the overall healthcare ecosystem.
